Inverkeithing Thistle Or United?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know where I can confirm the correct name of the Inverkeithing team which won the Scottish Junior Cup in 1912 - was called Inverkeithing Thistle or United?

In "The Juniors" centenary book it is listed as Inverkeithing United but elsewhere on the internet it is referred to as Thistle.

Cowdenbeath programme Alba cup v Dundee (18 Aug 2009) has an article on a player called Tom Glancy.

The article says "Tom played in the juveniles with Cowdenbeath St Leonards and then on the left wing in the juniors with Inverkeithing United just after they had won the Scottish Junior Cup. He joined 1st Division Falkirk aged 19 in June 1914".

Scottish Football Archive (www.geocities.com/br1anmccoll) says Inverkeithing Thistle formed 1897 disbanded 1905; Inverkeithing United formed 1911.

Inverkeithing Utd, based at Games Park entered the junior ranks in season 1912/13. Inverkeithing's previous junior club Inverkeithing Thistle had disbanded a few years earlier.

Inverkeithing defeated Anstruther Rangers, Crossgates Thistle, Denbeath Star, Perth Craigie, Rosewell Rosedale, Muirkirk Athletic and Kilbirnie Ladeside on the road to the final. Dunipace from Stirlingshire supplied the final opposition at Firhill on 24th May 1913. Fifeshire and Stirlingshire had earlier contested the Scottish Cup final, Falkirk defeating Raith Rovers 1-0. Inverkeithing United, however, extracted due revenge on behalf of the Kingdom. The game was won by a single goal headed home by wing-half Stafford, an Englishman and Dunfermline and Fifeshire cricketer, in the 43rd minute. Inverkeithing United thus became the first East of Scotland club to win the Cup.

After the game, the Inverkeithing party returned home by train. The railway printers were obviously unacquainted with Inverkeithing's football fame as the excursion tickets read Inverkeithing United Free Church Party rather than Inverkeithing United Football Club Party. As the train neared Inverkeithing the returning players and supporters were thrilled to see a massive bonfire had been lit in their honour. Unfortunately, the celebratory bonfire turned out to be an inferno which had engulfed and gutted Caldwell's Paper Mill - the workplace of many of those returning on the train. This put something of a dampner on the celebrations. The Cup was not actually handed over until Monday, 2nd June when the committee of the Scottish Junior FA assembled at Inverkeithing Music Hall and presented the trophy to skipper Douglas Morgan. United's overall record for the season was P 39 W 23 D 10 L 6 F 81 A 31 and they had also won the Cowdenbeath Cup. The Cup winning side was: Paterson; Ross, Morgan; McKenzie, Birrell, Stafford; Laing, Ramsay, Brown, Allan and Davis.

Before the start of the next season Douglas Morgan had signed for Hull City, Willie Birrell for Cowdenbeath, Jim McKenzie for Sunderland, Nelson Stafford for Queen's Park and Harry Brown for East Stirling. Birrell served Cowden faithfully for 12 years. Gunner Douglas Morgan died on 31st December 1916 – a victim of the Great War and is buried at Vlamertinge Military Cemetery some 5 miles from Ypres in Belgium. No-one envisaged in 1913 that it would be 47 years before the trophy would return again to Fife. In the intervening period, the only Fife club to reach the semi-final was Rosslyn Juniors from Dysart who lost 1-0 to Glasgow Perthshire at Tynecastle in 1932
